Stockport: Directions, Beer & Food

Recommended Posts

Stockport County, Edgeley Park, Hardcastle Road, Stockport, SK3 9DD.

Away fans are predominantly housed in the Railway End, where 1,558 supporters can be accommodated. This area is a former terrace that has had seats bolted onto to it, so is not ideal. It has no roof and therefore you are at the mercy of the elements. If a large away support is expected then an additional 800 seats can be allocated in the Popular Side This stand is covered, but has a number of supporting pillars which may impede your view. WARNING: In both areas the stewards enforce a no standing policy.

The internet Football Grounds Guide says “Stockport is another club that has become tolerant towards away supporters in recent years and is now a more pleasurable away trip than it used to be.” As in most grounds, this does not apply if away fans sit in the areas allocated for home fans, as some Latics fans found out last season, when they went in the Cheadle End, made themselves known and were assaulted by home fans.

Disabled facilities:

There are four parking spaces that have been designated for disabled people in the home parking area. It is suggested that away fans phone in advance in order for the club to secure them spaces.

A lift is provided to give wheelchair users access to the Cheadle End Stand where raised seating, toilets and catering are provided. There are 32 wheelchair seats in the stadium, 6 of which are in the away area.

How to get there:

From The North/South:

M6 to junction 19. Take the A556 towards Manchester/Altrincham. Then join the M56 towards Manchester Airport. After a few miles leave the M56 and join the M60 towards Stockport. Leave the M60 at Junction 1 and head towards Stockport. Turn right at the second set of traffic lights to go onto the A560 towards Cheadle. Then turn left into Edgeley Road (there is a pub on the left hand corner at the lights at this junction). Go straight down Edgeley Road then take a right on Dale Street, take the fourth turn on the right and you will be on Hardcastle Road.

From The East:

M62 to junction 18. Take the M60 towards Stockport. Leave the M60 at Junction 1 and head towards Stockport. Turn right at the second set of traffic lights to go onto the A560 towards Cheadle. Then turn left into Edgeley Road and then directions are the same as from the North/South.

Where to park:

Street Parking. WARNING: Beware of some ‘residents only’ parking areas that have been introduced recently.

By train:

Stockport railway station is within walking distance of the stadium (around half a mile). Come out of the station and turn left up Station Road, and continue up the hill towards the roundabout. Go straight over the roundabout and turn left into Caroline Street for the stadium.

NOTE: Stockport station's main entrance has been modernised, and is sign-posted from the platforms. This is on the opposite side of the station from the stadium. If you find yourself in the ticket hall with a taxi rank in front of you, go back into the station through the subways under the platforms, then follow the directions above.

Where to drink:

There is a small Labour Club (C.I.U. Affiliated) right by the entrance to the Railway End, that allows visitors in for a small entrance fee.

There are a number of pubs in Castle Street, across the main road from the away end, including the Royal Oak, the Sir Robert Peel, the Armoury and the Grapes.

NOTE: One pub to avoid is John Jo Greens and alcohol is not available in the away areas of the stadium.

Where to eat:

There are many restaurants in Stockport as well as many pubs in the area that serve meals.

Inside the stadium the refreshment kiosk offers a good range of pies, including the Chicken Balti.

The secret here (from the old days) is to get in early and get onto the back row (*) - easier to defend yerself

(*) not that I condone this sort of irresponsible behaviour
