I'd have thought that was purely down to money. He was captain last year and played the majority of their games and a lot in central midfield. I think he signed a 5 year contract in 2012 when they were still relatively flush so its likely that whatever he was on then they can't or don't want to afford now.

I think if they take up their option they have to do so on the previously agreed terms. By letting it lapse it means they can offer him a lower deal which may have been what has happened.

There is a suggestion they paid highly in the season just gone with the intention of going up but won't be doing so next year. They also have a new stadium to pay for.
