Paul Futcher was classy for us, we have had a few classy defenders here, John Hurst, Richard Jobson, Dick Mulvaney, Earl Barratt, Paul Warhurst etc.

Hope so, looking at his youtube vid he looks a great prospect.

Went to the chippy last night (I live in Stafford) and noted a bloke in a Walsall shirt. 'Walsall fan then?' I said, 'I'm the manager' he replied. Turned out to be Jon Whitney, told him I was an Oldham fan and he said he had just been watching our defeat at Millwall and that his chief scout will be at our match tonight ahead of this weekends game. Wouldn't give anything away of course but when I mentioned that we had 10 debutants on Saturday he said that they too had 7 so a big shake up at the Bescot too pre season. Turns out he lives round the corner. Small world.

Agree, teams are in this league on merit regardless of the size of the club. You only occasionally get a Norwich or a Southampton running away with it.

Why has nobody at either club made this happen, great idea.

I suspect that Sheridan sent his agent off anywhere to find him a club as he didn't think Latics had the financial strength to honour his contract and the contracts of the players he wanted to bring in. That, coupled with the desperate need for cash (season ticket discounts) is where I think we are. Anything other than that then he has let us down. Sounds like we are in financial difficulties again and It may help to stop the hares running if the club were to deliver an honest statement, give an interview on player with Simon Corney, and then add in the acceptance by us, the supporters, that it is incredibly difficult to run a club with any success at this level on crowds of 3,000 plus. The budget isn't enough to attract the players to compete at the top end unless, a la Royle, we manage to collect a group of modest players that just happen to gel and develop beyond expectations. That's the reality, now is the time for the board/Corney to talk to us, they are only the current custodians, it's our club for life.

If Sheridan had signed until the end of the season only and (like Gerrard) just wanted to put himself in the shop window, then saved us and then moved on then so be it. He didn't though, he signed a two and a half year contract. If he goes then the contract and his stated 'love of Latics' will have proved meaningless and empty, I don't believe either of those relate to Sheridan and expect him to see out the job.

The problem is, it's easier to get a job while you are still in one. It's probably more sensible to take up new offers while your stock is high than wait for the inevitable sack and then sit around and hope śomething will come along. Hope Sheridan doesn't see it like that but anyone who has changed jobs will know that your loyalty to the new employer switches instantly to them with little real thought for the one you are leaving.

Mills playing on the right would have been a better option perhaps.

Home wins against Crewe and Coventry will safely see us home. I agree it might come to this, we could potentially lose all three of these away games on the run but two home wins will hopefully be enough.
