Guest oa_exile
>>Swansea Evening Post<< Police arrest eight as bottle-throwing hooligans marr Swansea City win over Cardiff VIOLENT scenes marred Swansea's derby win over Cardiff last night. Hooligans went on the rampage and pelted police with large rocks and glass bottles. Troubled flared just before Cardiff fans left the Liberty Stadium. One fan said: "It was ugly stuff. "It definitely took the shine off the result." Police said there were eight arrests, but added that the violence had been on a smaller scale compared to the notorious clashes of previous years. There had already been tense moments prior to kick-off, with hundreds of Swans supporters waiting for the bus load of Cardiff fans. Insults and a couple of glass bottles were hurled at the convoy, which was well over 100 yards away. Once the game was underway, police initially described the night as being relatively trouble free. Officers had made a handful of arrests, mostly relating to public order offences. However, that all-changed after the match ended. As the crowds left the stadium Cardiff fans hurled stones and debris at the police from their fenced off location. A baying mob then gathered on the Morriston-bound carriageway of the A4067 and waited to taunt the bus loads of Cardiff fans due to leave the city. A line of 150 officers moved in to make sure there were no clashes between rival supporters. However, as police tried to move fans back on to Neath Road, troubled erupted. Glass bottles were hurled at officers, and police dogs yelped as they were hit by large rocks. One youth goaded police before hurling a traffic cone at them. As the convoy of Cardiff fans headed for the M4, the number of missiles increased dramatically. Fans tried to run up Neath Road towards the Texaco filling station, but were cut off by officers. Once the buses had left, policemen on horseback then chased hooligans up Cwm Level Road. Officers were continuing to make arrests well past midnight. It is not clear how many were arrested but police have said they hope officers armed with digital and video cameras will identify the troublemakers who took some of the sparkle off Swansea's famous win. Of those arrested, five were in the vicinity of the stadium with the remaining three in Swansea City Centre prior to kick-off. South Wales Police's Assistant Chief Constable Robert Evans said: "Whilst the vast majority of spectators were well behaved, a minority made up of several hundred, caused officers and stewards concern throughout the event. "After the game ended, officers were forced to position themselves in such a way to prevent protagonists clashing. During this, officers were subjected to missile throwing and sustained threats of violence. "It is of credit to the vast majority of mature fans that they supported police and the clubs and confined their rivalries to the pitch. "However, the behaviour of others was totally unacceptable. It was thanks to the professionalism of the police officers and the stewards that the violence was contained to a small area and did not spoil the enjoyment of the majority of people. "The post-match investigation will be thorough and done in conjunction with both clubs. Neither the clubs or the police will tolerate this type of behaviour and we will seek to ban those identified from future games. "On a positive note, when compared to fixtures of previous years, the disorder was limited and confined to a small area, and this is a reflection of the efficiency and effectiveness of the policing operation." Frankly Mr Shankly
No surprise at all. They tried charging our buses when we drew there 0-0 a couple of years ago. Well, you say 'charging'. It was more like a gang of pre-pubescant Lonsdale-clad urchins pogoing up and down excitedly behind a line of stewards. Dead scary. I think pretty much it was turned up a notch or two against Cardiff last night.

A lovely bunch. Edited September 24, 2008 by Guernica

rudemedic
'Trouble' at Swansea v. Cardiff should come as no surprise as those two cities (and clubs) hate each other and the tension has been building up whilst they have been in different divisions. This sounds fairly tame compared to some of the stories my Dad (who grew up a Cardiff fan on the Cardiff side of the valleys) tells me of the trouble back in the day. However, perhaps it has made Swansea city council and the club realise how dangerous their park and ride scheme can be for the opposition fans and maybe they can make some adjustments to it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7632872.stm Reason for EDIT: found a different link Edited September 24, 2008 by rudemedic

No other means of transport could be used. Therefore no Cardiff fan with a ticket for the away end would have used the Park and Ride. They have been using the same system for years with games against both Bristol clubs and Forest fans had to do same alst year.
