BigfinLatic
Just landed on my doorstep... and after surveying thousands and billions of readers, and every writer/director/producer on the planet... here is the official top 10... 1. The Godfather 2. Raiders of the Lost Arc 3. Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes back 4. The Shawshank Redemption 5. Jaws 6. Goodfella's 7. Apocalypse Now 8. Singin In the Rain 9. Pulp Fiction 10. Fight Club Thoughts? Well, for me this is a load of balls as I hate gangster/mafia films, so to have two snore-enducing epics in the top 10 is simply pathetic.... Empire beating a new hope, raiders beating last crusade... and a very surprising entry for Fight Club.... Other films that could have been in my top 10... 15. the Dark Knight 20. Blade Runner 33. Alien (criminally beaten by aliens at 30!) 34. LOTR: ROTK (beaten by fellowship at 24) 39. the Matrix 49. Evil Dead 2 53. Donnie Darko 177. City of God 211. Moulin Rouge 228. No country for old men 289. The Thing 394. Cloverfield Hmmm....

leeslover
Is it only me who finds the Godfather films snooze-inducing? I just don't find myself caring about any of the characters. I love a good mafia film too, Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Donnie Brasco, but the Godfather ones are over-hyped IMO.
OldhamSheridan
I can't even find Memento in the list (I may have missed it in the 40,000 pages you have to scroll through though). Some do leap out as wrong though. Jurassic Park at 232? Sixth Sense at 332? It's a wonderful life at 195??? Saving Private Ryan at 156? North by Northwest at 98? The Deer Hunter at 467? The Deer Hunter? 467? What the hell were these people choosing this on? And I wouldn't have the dull as dull can be Lost in Translation in the top 128 million. My current top ten would probably be something along the lines of: 1. Memento (can't find) 2. City of God (177) 3. M (212) 4. Clerks (361) 5. American History X (311) 6. Amores Perros (492) 7. Come and See (60 - well it got some recognition) 8. The Great Escape (82) 9. The Deer Hunter (467) 10. North by Northwest (98)
Beardy
You cant please everyone, Never seen the Godfather lot, basically as it doesnt even intrest me in the slightest just going through the list and a few of note. 468: The Crow, cult film and great moody pic. 466: Snatch, OK not everyones cup of tea, but look at the film, the plot and the actors and it works! 465: 12 Monkeys, head f**k at its greatest. 457: Full Metal Jacket, im saying nothing. 443: Dog day afternoon, Pacino at his best. 395: Casino, oh my god im starting to hate this list! 378: Goonies, as a childhood favourite i bought it, its still very watchable. 361: Clerks, Proper indie flick, introduced me and others to the stoners Jay & Silent Bob. 337: 300, stunning! 332: The Sixth Sense, still gets me how you never notice nobody lets onto him! 320: Braveheart, oh my god! Ok so i said a few, but im now getting pissed off with this as loads of classic films are being overlooked by things like Manga and black and white romantics, but as i said in the opening sentence "You cant please everyone" Now back to it! 305: The Prestige, wasnt expecting that one! 260: Field of dreams, Not sure why i like this but i suppose its placed higher than i thought! 240: Forrest Gump, wrong! one of the greatest storytelling films ever. 210: Platoon, someone is sat there writing their list thinking, nah this film isnt any good. give me a damn gun this is top 10 material. 173: Memento, not seen as of yet, but only heard good things. Here you go OS! 158: Saving Private Ryan, 10 years old and still as good as when i first saw it. 134: Seven, coooool! 132: Pans labyrinth, excellent film and the pale man scares the :censored: outta me! 131: Last of the mohicans, Daniel Day lewis in brilliant form! 115: Blazing Saddles, so none PC that even the PC brigade had to laugh. 113: Anchorman, "When in Rome!" 102: The Hustler, number 1 in my book, the Late Paul Newman with a classic. 61: the Usual Suspects, Kevin Spacey kicks ass! 59: Close encounters of the 3rd kind, another film i saw as a kid that scared me back then, but having watched it all growned up, i appreciate it much more. 53: Donnie Darko, WTF was that all about, i have to watch it again! Well worth it! 39: The matrix, the 1st and best, dont bother with the other 2 as they dont come close. 6: Goodfellas, maybe a bit higher just for the violent nature of Joe Pesci. 4: Shawshank redemption, funny how a film flops so much at the box office but makes it big on video! Thats it!
davegtt
Cant be bothered searching through 500 film names but did anyone notice Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in there? One of my faves of all time
Frankly Mr Shankly
It's an official list, right? Don't they do this every couple of years? Usual suspects (Not the film) in the top ten. Again, seems like a list of 'popular' films seen by the masses really. There's some fantastic world cinema gems that absolutely blow most of that lot out of the water. Because most people haven't seen them, they don't get a look-in.

Because most people haven't seen them, they don't get a look-in. It was voted for by "10,000 Empire readers, 150 of Hollywoods finest and 50 key film critics". A few issues back they asked reader to vote for their top 10....obviously everyone has different views otherwise everone would have voted for the same 10! I forgot to vote, but would have voted for Goodfellas at number 1. Its just an amazing film I never tire of watching. And if it was upto me Ghostbusters would definitley be a lot higher than 189. And the Godfather pt 2 is better than Godfather pt 1.
tactically_naive
The ranking that "Apocolypse Now" gets in this kind of survey bewilders me. It is a rambling pile of steaming horse poo and should have been drowned in a bucket at birth. OI, BRANDO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. leeslover
115: Blazing Saddles, so none PC that even the PC brigade had to laugh. Strange you mention that, but I recall watching it as a kid and my (Irish) mum wetting herself all the way through, then all of a sudden completely failing to see the funny side to, "OK, we'll give some land to the niggers and the Chinks, but we don't want the Irish!" The ranking that "Apocolypse Now" gets in this kind of survey bewilders me. It is a rambling pile of steaming horse poo and should have been drowned in a bucket at birth. OI, BRANDO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It is rather pretentious, I fail to appreciate the dramatic intensity of Brando's bits. It's a more entertaining film until they find him.
