Former Italy striker Fabrizio Ravanelli is being lined up to become manager of Stockport - if a proposed buy-out of the League One strugglers is completed.

A consortium led by exManchester City and Leicester striker Jim Melrose hope to seal a financial package that would take County out of administration.

And they want to make an instant impact by naming Ravanelli as boss.

The 40-year-old former Juventus, Middlesbrough, Lazio and Derby forward has been working as a TV pundit since retiring four years ago. But he has been approached about the prospect of cutting his managerial teeth in League One - and is interested in the job.

Melrose's group need to forge an agreement with Sale Sharks - the rugby club who own their Edgeley Park home - before they can complete a takeover.

Talks stalled last week and administrators were forced to sell James Tunnicliffe and Gary Dicker to Brighton to cut costs.

I recall him playing at Edegely Park when 'Boro won 2-0 in the League Cup semi final in 1997.

Tony Dinning was sent off in the second leg (which County won 1-0, making them the only lower league side to beat 4 top division teams in a cup competition in a single season) - for kicking Ravenelli.

Some said at the time a knighthood for Dinning would have more appropriate than a 3 match ban!

I still think the Gannon / Motherwell "verbal agreement" is a bit of posturing and negotiation by Gannon, who is apparently a owed £300k by County that he is unlikely to see again. The plan has been to reinstate him all along, but he isn't happy with the financial side, especially a CVA that is likely to offer all creditors 1p in the £ this week.

It is still possible that the administrators need Gannon's agreement to secure 75%+ acceptance of the CVA, or a 15 point penalty will be applied.

It would be ironic to say the least of the hero of County fans was actually the cause of them starting next season staring relegation in the face.
