Takemeanywhere
How do people feel about Chink ? It's racist and entirely different. You would refer to somebody from China as Chinese. Is the word 'Chinese' racist?

And yet, you don't have to use the 'tish' part of the word Scottish, you can just say Scot. The absurdity of this is all that I have been talking about. Paki is offensive because of the way the word has been used over the decades and that is an incredible shame.

LeylandLatic
How do people feel about Chink ? It's a different case altogether as it isn't just the shortening of a word. I don't think people should say it. We're talking about distinguishing between racism and offensive here, but we're kind of going off on a tangent. I think you understand my position in that racism is a term banded about far too frequently and while some words are in reality just as acceptable as others they are deemed racist, when context and perception is the most important thing rather than the word itself. However, because of public perception some words will always be viewed as offensive no matter how they are used and so are best left alone to not cause unnecessary offence. This whole debate from my point of view is purely hypothetical and i don't use these words, but it just seems like you tried to jump down Takemeanywhere and davebuckley06's throats when they are in fact talking hypothetically as well and don't actually advocate using these words freely. They're just making a point about perception more than anything else as far as I can see, rather than wanting to go out and offend anyone or put anyone down. Prendy_1984
If you went in the local shop and it was being run by some guy from Pakistan, would you say or find it acceptable to say "Morning Paki" ? Maybe that will answer the question for you... By referring to someone as Paki you are making their race the focal point instead of their individuality... If you cant understand that then that is your failing... You are an idiot. If the shop was ownedby a scottish man would you say morning Scot? (Maybe if his name was Scott) Or if he was Greek would you say morning Greek? Would you balls, no-one would. And no one is suggesting they would, but the term 'paki' shouldn't always be seen as racist. You said that most people from Pakistan would be offended by the term but I think you're wrong. Whenever cricket is played in Pakistan there are banners of 'Paki Power' are they offending themselves? Their own team? Saying 'oi paki' in the street would be rude, but not necessarily racist. Jus as rude as sayin 'oi fatty'

Frankly Mr Shankly
Saying 'oi paki' in the street would be rude, but not necessarily racist. Jus as rude as sayin 'oi fatty' I think the term "Paki" is the same as the term "Nigger". There's no difference in context whatsoever. rudemedic
Black guys say "nigger" to each other... You say "nigger" to a black man and see what happens.... Anyway I wish you all well with your disgusting use of language... Time to move on.... This is the crux of most people's arguments about words not being offensive. If the people from that particular group of people don't want us to use the word then they themselves should set an example. I don't mind being called a Brit (I'm British and proud of it), I don't particularly like being called a 'RosBif' which is what the French call us (our equivalent of Frog). I would agree that both "Paki" and "Nigga/er" are offensive terms but to see them being used in the relevant culture by the relevant people doesn't spread a good example to those of an impressionable age when they become more mainstream. Rappers use the word "Nigga" an awful lot in a non degroatory way and it gives the impression that its is OK to be used by white people when referring to those who are "Black." The original complaint came about as a Jewish poster disliked Leeds being called "Yids" and said it was offensive. I've never known that many Jewish people use the word "Yid" in the same way black people use the word "nigga" and they see it as offensive rightly don't use it. The " 'Yid' army" are so called not because they are Jewish (their most famous member is quite clearly a proud white anglo-saxon) but because Spurs have a notoriously large Jewish following. A lot of the people called "Paki" by white people aren't actually Pakistani but they do come from a country nearby. To call someone Pakistani (nevermind Paki) is offensive to these people the same way British people wouldn't like to be called German/French. I would say 000 though that you have made a rod for your own back a little bit here as there is an awful lot of degrogatory terms used on this board about different sections of the white British society, including the Welsh, the Scots, the irish, protestants, catholics, Geordies, Sunderlandites, scousers, southerners, Londoners, Burtonians and Bristolians who didn't comment on them and this makes you look a bit of a hypocrit when you act all high and mighty on behalf of someone else. Max Damage
I see our resident socialist on his crusade to eradicate racism were ever he sees it is at it again. Posting things as fact with claims of the vast majority with no proof whatsoever. This country is so great and so super under the socialists with a united europe full of divesrsity and multi culturism so effin fantastic that the UK is breaking up as the scots and welsh have their own parlaiments etc as demanded by the same dickhead and 2 faced socialists. real
Might as well throw my 2p in... If I go out with some mates and we all stuff our faces on a 5 course meal, and I look over at one of them and see him having a second desert, and I call over "look at you, you fat pig" as a joke, that's fine. If i walk down the street and say the same to some woman I don't know, it'd be offensive. That's why words are not themselves racist, and that is why black people can use terms other people cannot - context and situation. You have to know someone well to use otherwise insulting terms in a joking way. A posting on a mesage board using what would be considered offensive anywhere else is likely to have been meant in an offensive manner. It's not necessarily racist though - that requires another level of context - there's often a clear difference between offensive statements; prejudiced ones; and racist ones. Max Damage
Aye very true Mickey. They give socialists a bad name. They have betrayed the very name, unless of course you believe that socialists main agenda is control through dependency on the state because they always know better than us. Max Damage
Well at least most of us are BIFFO's but I guess some sensitive souls on here will get offended by it rather than have a chuckle. A Brit and proud to be a Brit and not stupid enough to see any offence in being described as a Brit.
