Legoboy
Following on from the "Getting Real" thread... “the real fans stick through the bad times as well as the good.” B. Owen (2010) What constitutes a "real fan"? The amount of money the fan spends with the club multiplied by The amount of games fan attends divided by The length of time they have been a fan = real fan rating? There is no way to define a real fan but change the word fan(s) to the word sucker(s) and that’s how I personally feel at the moment. oafc0000
Supported the club 22 years... Only been once this season... I probably don't qualify in some peoples eyes... So people say none of us our fans but are just customers...

I don't mind being called a customer however as a customer of this business I am becoming disenfranchised with their brand.
Beardy
At the moment you arent a real fan, you are a customer to what seems to be a growing trend of clubs forgetting that we were here long before multi million pound owners!
Bring Back Ronnie Moore
I supported the club until they started playing crap this season so I stopped going. Then City bought a load of good players and started playing good entertaining football and look like they could win stuff this season and they're not too far away either, they're in a cup semi final against Man Utd tomorrow and they're 2-1 from the first leg. I think I'll enjoy being a City fan. Woo, go Tevez! Edited February 13, 2010 by Bring Back Ronnie Moore

With Manchester City's ground only 2 miles from the proposed new Failsworth ground, match tickets around £10 dearer than current BP prices and the spectacle on the COM stadium pitch more entertaining than Oldham currently provide it would be hard to argue against a logical shift in entertainment provider. Are there any logical football fans?

So people say none of us our fans but are just customers... Been a fan for nearly 12 months, been to every home game I can make including friendlies in closed season, missed 3, 2 through work 1 through holiday, also been there on a few away days, again including friendlies, with more in the pipeline for the rest of the season, not forgetting converting my son and taking 3 nephews regulary. I've felt like that. Could be the start of a beautiful relationship. Edited January 27, 2010 by tangerinedreams

Beardy
Its hard to think of all those times on a tuesday or wednesday making a long away trip to some ghost town to watch us lose, and travelling the length and breadth, being out of work and scrimping and saving just so i can go to a game on the saturday and because some like myself don't go anymore we arent real fans. To be truthful, if there wasn't for 285 TV and movie channels, games consoles, the internet, and in your case TV porn in colour we'd all be down at Latics, even if it was much worse than this. I'll always go, or feel like going on a Saturday, money (or gratis ticket) permitting. Just because that last 20 minutes V Colchester, last two minutes against Barnsley ('04), The Everton game, the 5-0 against Forest, Gillingham away.... moments like that make sitting through years and years and years of :censored:e completely worthwhile. For me anyway.

Legoboy
I don't think real fans talk like they're a contest on The Apprentice. You are right Frankly Mr Shankly. I think fans, real or otherwise, are expected to ignore the fact that the club is a business until it suits the owners or their representatives to remind us. Going back to the original quote… “the real fans stick through the bad times as well as the good.” Supporting Oldham Athletic is a hobby I am passionate about it is not however my (bloody) family. I don’t have to stick with them through the bad times as well as the good. You wouldn’t keep going to a rubbish concert because a band used to be good but you might go back if they released a great new album. “Keep coming to my gigs, I know I’m rubbish now but I promise I will be good again in 10 years” D Bowie (1987) As if…

Barry may put a lot of work in but he’s out of touch and doesn’t know much about PR (though as an ex copper I wouldn’t expect him to). Instead of putting the fans point of view across trying to work with the club to improve the match day experience he comes out with such rants. Well there aren’t enough “real” fans to pay the way and so Barry should be looking at how to get those additional “non-real” fans in to balance the book. Guess what, the stick approach doesn’t work and furthermore it smacks of desperation.

outoftheblue
The fact that anyone cares enough for their team that they are willing to trade opinions on forums makes them real fans. The fact that they question the outcome of the board's decisions makes them real fans. The fact that they crave success makes them real fans. We are all real fans. And yet, Almost 40 years of watching Latics, Six years without missing a game at home, away, and in friendlies, Overnight stays on Tuesday nights in places like Exeter and Southampton using up my holiday entitlement, Over 20 years of Season Tickets, Countless Home and Away shirts (No, I don't mean shirts advertising crummy Australian Soaps!), and Several match sponsorships, Don't make me any more of a real fan than say, 0000, who has only been once this season, or Tangerine Dreams, who has supported the team for just 12 months. No, we are all 'Real' fans that follow the club in our own way, and with different passion. All my waned and previous passion for Latics does, is make me sad and angry that the club has fallen to this level, and some puppet has the affront to suggest that I'm not a real fan because I'm worried about the current state of the club. I'm concerned, and want what's best for the club Mr Owen. That makes me a real fan.
