oafc-latics
id prefer him as a ball winner or playmaker in midfield
futchers briefs
I am struggling to answer this question without the scent of 'sarcasm' wafting from it.
Snookmeister
alongside Abbot--thoughts ? Not as ridiculous as many are making out. At least the lad can finish, which is more than can be said for many of our forwards at the current time. However, I think his talents are put to best use in his current position. A quality midfielder can be as much of an asset to a team as a quality forward, if not more......

singe
one goal does not make him a good finisher. A bit like Deane SMalley
opinions4u
So we get a hint of creativity in midfield, and the suggestion from the terraces is stick it up front instead? For the first time since Wellens we potentially have a player who can make chances. His set pieces are a million times more threatening than the old Danny Whitaker short-corner routine. An if he can (when the manager allows) get beyond our main striker a little more often he could easily be a 10 goal a season midfielder. bluehobbit
not physically enough for a forward When teams back off our midfield as they did tuesday night he looks quality in the middle - leave him there and let him group could be a very important player in our future
razza699
rather have him than Parker
Snookmeister
rather have him than Parker Precisely. I'd like to bet Stephens goal to shots ratio is better than the wee man's.....
OldhamSheridan
Precisely. I'd like to bet Stephens goal to shots ratio is better than the wee man's..... Yes, but before we get too giddy, how many people would rather play Flahavan up front than the wee poisoned dwarf bastard man.
slystallone
Nah - Dale isn't a striker nor will he be. The type of goal he scored on Tues night; he could score 5+ a season of those sorts of goals from his CM position; just by taking a chance & breaking through past the forwards with some regularity. Especially as we have a striker able to make those types of passes in Pawel. Add in the odd potential direct free-kick and Dale could be worth a cheecky 5-7 a season from midfield if he works on making those types of runs. We’ve really missed goals from midfield this season; they’re key to make a team ‘fire’ and challenge. Gary Mac was the last one who contributed serious goals from the centre of the park…………
RoytonBlueLad
Gary Mac was the last one who contributed serious goals from the centre of the park………… Didn't Danny Whit get about 8-10 last season too.
bluehobbit
Didn't Danny Whit get about 8-10 last season too. Yeah whitts did well for goals - he does have it in his locker but his all round game just inst there
De_La_Vega
Firstly Whitaker isn't just about goals, he has excellent vision and passing range around the middle of the park but lacks the physicality to impose himself on the opposition midfield. You may note that games such as Leyton Orient and MK Dons this season - where we have looked half decent - have often coincided with games where Whitaker has been able to get on the ball and play. As for the post though - never a chance in hell of this. Stephens' key weakness in the middle is that he is a touch one-paced, and he has done nothing to suggest that he can play up front! Bonkers suggestion! He would be much better trying to become a poor man's Carrick - lacks a bit of pace but pulls the strings in midfield, sets the team's tempo, tackles (a bit un-Carrickesque true) around and basically keeps the ball moving around the park. Add a bit of adventure as we saw on Tuesday and he could be a useful player - especially with his excellent dead-ball delivery.
Roger Ritchie
Put Hazel up front, he's scored more than Stephens.
Ernie For England
We have finally found a midfielder with real quality and has the potential to be a star player. Why on earth would you put him up front?

Break The Silence
Precisely. I'd like to bet Stephens goal to shots ratio is better than the wee man's..... I'd rather have Dan "QE2" Snook up top myself........
steveoafc
So once more penney says there's no hurry to get another striker in as we can play smalley or parker there
