Barrow F.C., Holker Street Stadium, Wilkie Road, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, LA14 5UW.

 

Away fans are accommodated on one side of the open Crossbar Terrace at one end of the ground. There is additional standing space available beside the Main Stand, and some seats are made available to visiting supporters in the covered Main Stand.

 

The stadium’s weakest point is said to be the toilet facilities (or lack of them!). Urinals are little changed since the ground was developed and, with the exception of those associated with the main stand, not for those of nervous disposition! There is a single WC for females and one for males by the stairs at the back of the middle of the popular side….. if you really must. :toilet:

 

Disabled facilities:

Most entrances involve negotiating stairs, one exception being that at the West end of the ground. There is a temporary disabled shelter with space for wheelchairs and friends also accessible from the same end and stewards are helpful. The number of disabled spaces is very limited. Contact the club for information on disabled parking.

 

How to get there:

By car:

From the M6: Leave at Junction 36 and take the A590 towards Barrow-in-Furness. As you enter the outskirts of Barrow you will pass a fire station on your right. You should now be able to see the floodlights of the stadium over on your left. Turn left into Wilkie Road and then right into Holker Street. Plenty of street parking is available.

From the Lake District: A592 to Newby Bridge then A590 to Barrow.

From West Cumbria: A595, A591 and A590 to Barrow (or to reverse the directions once given in the club programme for an away game at Workington – keep the sea on the right and the sheep on the left).

 

Car parking:

There is ample car parking available on the streets 200m to the South or on the streets 400m to the East of the stadium.

 

By train:

If travelling from the South, take West Coast and Cross Country trains to Preston or Lancaster then Trans-Pennine or Northern services to Barrow. From Preston services run to Barrow every hour, taking around one and a quarter hours and roughly the same from Lancaster, (around the hour mark), though there can be gaps of 90 minutes between trains at certain times of the day. Trans-Pennine trains also run direct from Manchester Airport every 2 hours (an indirect service runs in between) taking around two and a quarter hours.

If travelling from even further North, Northern services run from West Cumbria and Carlisle. Direct from Carlisle takes around two and a half hours, indirect services up to 4 hours.

On leaving the station, turn right into Holker Street and the stadium is approximately half a mile or 5 – 10 minutes walk away.

 

Where to Drink:

The Club has its own club house bar called the Crossbar.

 

There is a pub next door to the ground called the Soccer Bar which is independent from the club and popular with visiting supporters as well as home fans.

 

Noted pubs:

From the Holker Street end of the stadium it is a 10-15 minute walk down Holker Street into the town centre. At the junction of Holker Street and Abbey Road, near the railway station, you will find a fine action statue of Emlyn Hughes, who came from Barrow. Across the road is The Duke, a developing four star hotel with a good selection of drinks generally, real ales in particular.

 

If you walk a further block to your right you will reach The Furness Railway, a Wetherspoon’s pub themed to the company that led to the development of Barrow.

 

Noted pubs serving food:

Carry on along Wilkie Road from the stadium and you will reach the Tally Ho pub on your left.

Continue along the Walney Road (A590) towards the town centre firstly passing Asda. Turn left onto Duke Street for the town centre itself, before which you will find the CAMRA Good Beer Guide listed Ambrose Hotel.

Alternatively continue on the A590 to The Owl and The Pussycat pub.

 

Where to eat:

After passing the Owl and Pussycat pub, you will reach a retail park that has a number of eating outlets including a McDonald’s and KFC as well as a Tesco Extra.

Eating places in the town centre are in the streets running off Duke Street and Abbey Road.

 

Catering inside the stadium is in the form of a burger van.

 

Things worth seeing/doing:

Furness Abbey, founded in 1127, a magnificent ruin of one of the wealthiest Cistercian Abbeys in England.

Piel Castle, a 14th Century defensive stronghold on the remote Piel Island, can be reached by ferry.

 

Dalton-in-Furness, the ancient capital of Furness, is home to South Lakes Wild Animal Park which offers a unique safari on foot with many animals in natural surroundings.

 

Barrow has three internationally-renowned Nature Reserves, two on Walney Island and one at Sandscale Haws.

 

Barrow is surrounded by miles of beaches, each unique in character. The main beaches are on Walney Island, at Roanhead and Rampside.

 

For families there are delights of Barrow Superbowl, Apollo Multiplex Cinema, Wacky Warehouse and Lazerzone.

 

For connoisseurs of nightlife and entertainment Barrow has a wealth of excellent restaurants and lots of lively pubs. Renowned at the ‘clubbing capital of Cumbria’ B) there are many night clubs to choose from along Cornwallis Street and also the floating nightclub on the dockside.

Er, when are we playing Barrow? Its wasn't on the list of friendlies that Prozac linked to in the friendlies thread.

It's on the Barrow AFC site though.

 

My mate's from up there and so we might potter up and have a watch.

The Barrow match is mentioned elsewhere with a link to the official site news article.

 

As mentioned elsewhere, it would be useful to have the friendly fixtures added to the top of the 2010/11 fixture list on the OS.

 

I'll be elsewhere drinking to excess on 10 July, otherwise I might have made the trip.
