Hartlepool: Directions, Beer & Food

Recommended Posts

Hartlepool United, Victoria Park, Clarence Road, Hartlepool, TS24 8BZ.

The wind whipping off the North Sea goes right through you, so wrap up well. Away fans are in the Rink End Stand at one end of the stadium, where up to 967 can be seated. Unfortunately there are some supporting pillars in this stand, which may hinder your view, especially if there is a large away following. However acoustics are good even for small numbers.

Hartlepool fans nickname the club Pools (not The Pool). This goes back to the pre-1967 days when the boroughs of (old) Hartlepool and West Hartlepool became amalgamated as Hartlepool. It was because of the existence of the two very separate towns that the club was originally called Hartlepools United.

NOTE: If you bring your pet monkey with you, expect drastic action from the locals.

Disabled facilities:

There are ten places for disabled visiting supporters in the Cyril Knowles Stand, with suitable toilet facilities situated just behind the disabled enclosure. The Club has installed an induction loop system to the family enclosure of the Cyril Knowles Stand, which allows hearing-aid users to receive signals picked up and transmitted directly to their hearing aid telecoil, allowing spectators with impaired hearing to overcome the difficulties of a noisy environment or poor acoustic space, and hear more clearly.

The Induction Loop is served by a driver amplifier which is fed from the stadium sound amplification system. This ensures that all routine and safety broadcasts will be broadcast via the Induction Loop system.

How to get there:

By Car:

From the North (A19):

Exit the A19 at signpost Hartlepool A179 and turn left onto the A179. Follow signs to Hartlepool for 1.3 miles over two roundabouts.

At third roundabout turn right (s/p Town Centre, Docks A179) onto Easington Road. Follow Town Centre A179 signs for 1.5 miles over two roundabouts. At the third roundabout (easily recognised by the big balls!) turn right onto Marina Way.

At the next roundabout there are two choices - straight on and left to the parking at Jackson's Wharf in the Marina area, or right and then left at the lights into Clarence Road to the stadium.

From the South (A19)

Exit the A1(M) onto the A168 (A19) towards Teeside.

Thanks go to rudemedic for the following advice:

Note: It’s easy to miss the turn-off the A1(M) if you aren't paying attention, and if you see a turn off for Ripon and the A61 you have gone too far. Also be wary of the speed cameras on the A689- there's at least one in a 50mph zone and a fair few as you get closer into Hartlepool itself.

The A168 soon becomes the A19 and goes through Middlesbrough. Exit the A19 at signpost Hartlepool A689, Motorway A1(M).

At roundabout turn right (s/p Hartlepool A689) and continue on the A689 for 4.3 miles, through the village of Newton Bewley, to the roundabout by the Owton Lodge pub. Go straight on (s/p Town Centre A689) and follow Town Centre signs for 2.8 miles, over two roundabouts. At the traffic lights just past the Blacksmiths Arms on your left, go straight on. At the next traffic lights go straight on again over the bridge into the Marina complex and straight on again at the roundabout into Marina Way. This is the area for the Jackson's Wharf parking. To get to the stadium itself continue to the next roundabout and turn left (s/p The North A179, A1048). Turn left at the lights into Clarence Road to the stadium. Should the A689 be closed - carry on along A19 until the A179 (see "From the North").

Parking:

There is free car parking located in Clarence Road, next to the ground and dedicated Blue Badge spaces outside the away end.

Parking on The Marina and is free (about 5 mins walk from ground).

Warning: Do not park at Asda/Morrisons or you will be clamped.

In addition to the Jackson’s Wharf area, there is a car park behind the Mill House Stand for £2.50 all day and street parking is available around Raby Road, though you are strongly advised to keep valuables out of sight at all times!

By Train:

Hartlepool train station is a ten minutes walk from the stadium. Leave the station and go straight up a short approach road. At the end of the approach, turn right and head up Church Street towards the large church. At the end of this road is a bridge and junction with the A689. Go straight across the junction and the stadium is in front of you on the left hand side of the road.

By Bus:

Buses 7 and 7A, 3A, 4, 2 and 2A, and 14 go either to Marina Way or close to the stadium.

Where to drink:

The Hartlepool United Supporters’ Club H.Q. is The Corner Flag at the corner of the Mill House and the Rink End stands. Visiting supporters are welcome, on payment of an entry fee, to join the home fans in a quiet drink and Sky TV before and after the game, though early arrival is advised as this is a predictably popular pre and post-match venue.

The Engineers’ Club is five minutes from the stadium opposite the police station, just off the town centre and The Raglan Club is just behind the visitors end. Usual Club Rules apply regarding entry for these.

Noted pubs:

Jackson's Wharf:

About 5 minutes from the stadium. It is over the road from the ASDA store, to the left of the old sailing ship in the Museum of Hartlepool. It has good food and real ale, and is full of HUFC memorabilia.

The Causeway:

A 15 minutes walk away from the stadium. is located just around the corner from Cameron’s Brewery near the church. It has real ale and is very friendly.

The Tavern:

This is one for the train travellers, as it is located in Church Street. It has numerous real ales, and a warm, friendly atmosphere.

The Brewer and Firkin:

This pub is located in a 200 year old building in Whitby Street, and serves a variety of ales. The winner of the town's best pub food award. There is a pool table and a large screen TV.

Yates’s Wine Lodge:

This a relatively new pub, and is located on Victoria Road.

The Old West Quay:

This is a Brewer’s Fare, serving good food, with views over the Marina. Located in Maritime Avenue.

The Nursery Inn:

Situated on Hart Lane, this is a basic pub about ten minutes walk from the stadium serving good beer.

Where to eat:

rudemedic advises that there's the usual McDonald’s and stuff near to the stadium and the A689 turn-off from the A19 has a service station as part of it with another McDonalds and he thinks there’s a KFC.

The Brewer and Firkin, Old West Quay and Jackson’s Wharf pubs serve good food.

Inside the stadium it is said you’ll find the biggest meat and potato pies you have ever seen.

Attraction:

Next to the Jackson’s Wharf pub and the historic Quay is the Museum of Hartlepool, the finest free show in town and it tells the story of Hartlepool from prehistoric times to the present day, and features sea monsters, a real fishing coble to climb aboard, a Celtic Round House building, the first gas-illuminated lighthouse, models, computer-interactive displays and the PSS Wingfield Castle, a fully-restored paddle steamer, with the Coble Cafe on board.

Be it on your own head if you choose to eat the food inside the ground. It's been a few years since, and the portions certainly do look plentiful - but many an Oldham fan won't forget their food for another reason. :sick01:

Missing the junction flor the a168/a19 is a bit more time consuming this year as there are almost 20 miles of roadworks up the a1 with average speed cameras (another clue to say you've missed the junction). Its junction 49 of the a1(m).

If you do miss the junction and don't fancy turning round, (not as easy as it could be thanks to all the roadworks), best bet is to keep going up the a1/a1(m) until you reach junction 60, for the a689, turn right at the roundabout, straight on at the next roundabout, first exit (sign posted a689) at the following roundabout, then keep going until you reach the a19 and its striaght over the roundabout then as Diego's directions.

NOTE: Since this game is on NYD and neither of the train companies that serves Hartlepool are running a service to Hartlepool, getting the train is probably not the best idea.

According to http://www.arrivabus.co.uk/christmas-services-north-east/

and http://www.simplygo.com/news/christmas-and...-buses-20102011

NO. (There may be another company that runs buses in the North east but those are the 2 biggest)

If you really want to come in via Newcastle you probably have 2 ways- Metro to Sunderland and then taxi or train to Durham and then taxi (but both Taxis will be very expensive, Sunderland might be the cheaper option).

Scratch that the Metro is not running either.
