I happen to think Ried is being used wrongly, he needs the ball at his feet. The problems is that he won't try and win it in the air because he wants to control it, once we work it all out he will start scoring. I would say a new striker is bottom of the list, there is no point bring Cody Mc unless we improve the creative aspect. At the moment we are using Smith as the only outlet we need to get it down and pass, everytime we lumped it we lost it.

Agree it needs to be mixed up more. Like when Taylor was left totally on his own and Ciask found him whilst the whole of Sheffield and the crowd it as to be said looked at Smith.

Lumping it up to Smith to flick on means he can't then look to collect the ball, which leaves Reid to do so on his jack as the midfielders aint looking to get beyond him. Mix it up Latics.

What a load of bollocks

you don't like him do you? fair enough but to say 'what a load of bollocks' to a positive and probably more truthful post wont help will it.

i reckon what reid needs is a bit of support, from the team and from the fans. you can see what he tries to do but most of the time doesnt come off. we've got so many players who want to take people on themselves instead of a simple pass or cross. taylor/morais/reid spring to mind, not a criticism because theyre good players but dickov needs to find a system where theyll work together and decide when's best to go it yourself and when to keep putting it into the box.

To be fair he actually took up some nice positions today and looked pretty frustrated at his team mates never really finding him when he did. He showed a few nice touches and some bad ones but if you expect him to chase lost causes all day long you're gonna be disappointed, that's not who he is and he never will be. There was one moment in the first half that particularly stands out. Cross came in from Black, Smith went for goal with little pace on the cross and him fairly static so having to generate all the power himself, Reid had pulled away from his man for an easy knock down but he was ignored when it would have been a certain goal. He looked bemused to say the least as was I, but you know, strike parnterships need a bit of time to come together properly. The big problem isn't that reid lacks ability or that he's particularly lazy, it's that Oldham fans love a headless chicken. If we had a team of headless chickens giving it their all and got relegated, most of our fan base would be chuffed to bits it seems.

I should add I thought Parker played reasonably well and this isn't a reference to him. He looked ridiculously quick and pressurised the defence with little reward but showed little in terms of technical ability apart from one very decent cross (because the service was :censored: mainly, rather than him doing anything wrong). Reid is this year's scapegoat though, tell your friends.

I've got no interest in making any player a scapegoat. It amazes me how you can't give an opinion on a player without someone implying it's a witch hunt. Nor am am interested in watching chickens play headless or not. I'd love reid to do well, the lad went for 500 grand not a long ago, scored a few for walsall and occasionally shows good feet. I also take the point about the service, which was very poor. However today, in the first game of the season; he looked overweight, slow, and his body language was awful. His reaction to be taken off was baffling, throwing his arms about like he had scored hat trick and been hauled off. He got subbed because although the team struggled creativly, his contribution was below zero. I'm not expecting him to run all day, or chase a lost cause(that would be to much). I wouldn't though mind though if he won one header, didn't winge when he lost the ball, did his his best to get in the game, (especially when your teamates are struggling to find you, or the service is poor) and tried to justify the faith that dickov has in him. Inseatd walking around like the world owes him a favour.

im sure i read or something similar that the day kiegan signed and turned out in his (all be it a friendly) debut turned out well didnt it?

where the thread on Smith who also didnt do a great deal today and Mvoto diamond (to certain extent) whose head went for 10 mins or Lee who was caught out of position numerous times

not read the thread but first game of the season, lets wipe the slate and give them all a fresh chance.

R.Reid was a bit :censored: today but he wont play against sides who work as hard or as good as them every week

You only have to look at the condition he has come back in to realize he doesn't give a toss. And that's after a full pre season, unforgivable.

That is what I'm annoyed at. Its fine if it doesn't affect your career (well actually its not), but he is on last chance saloon and forget everyone going on about him taking a paycut and he is going to be up for it...................

I'm a couple of stone heavier than I should be but my career doesn't depend upon it (let's face it PD didn't want him back and neither did most of us but some daft clause has made us have to take him) - so he would have got in shape if he cared.

He bloody well wasn't up for it,and that annoys the :censored: out of me. He is 2 stone too heavy and he doesn't give a :censored: IMO. Thats what annoys me, he's another talented player who doesn't want it enough.

Looks like it. Heard some guy on the phone at half time describing Reid as "the laziest b*stard ever" etc. etc. 45 minutes into the first game of the season :petesake:

Mate, it could have been one 3000 fans today, i said the same about Parker after his :censored: debut against Stockport 2 years ago.

What makes me :censored:in angry is that stupid pic u post with your message with that hand over the head.. Wake up and smell it, the man is a donkey.

Spot on. You can see there is a player in there, somewhere, but his attitude is awful. If his hunger matched what bit of talent he has shown, he could be half decent. It's so frustrating to watch someone moaning, whingeing, and generally blaming everyone else for the fact that he is playin :censored:. Any Chance you could take some responibility for your weight, fitness, and attitude rueben?

Can anyone explain why he doesn't jump for headers, or even challenge for 50/50 balls?

I also agree with the comment of not being able to have an opinion on a player without people branding it as unfair criticism or making a player a boo boy.

Reid hasn't shown me one attribute since he's been here to warrant any belief in him. All I have seen him do is shrug his shoulders, sulk and throw his arms around like a child when he loses the ball.

Saying that, i'm ready to be proven wrong, but he has a lot of work to do.

If a little pic makes you ':censored:in angry' mate then you need to relax a little.

He probably is, you're right, but i've wiped the slate clean from last season and i'll give him a little bit more than 45 minutes this season before I get on the guys back.

Yeah I can, again its his lack of commitment which pisses me right off.

By the way you need to change the Penney out bit at the bottom of your thingy, he went about 18 months ago

I thought that last season he looked overweight, when I heard a forward had lost two stone I presumed it was Reid. However today we could have had Rooney and Drogba up front and they would have struggled with that service.Midfield to me was the issue, nobody,Taylor apart, getting ahead or joining the strikers or offering any support.Have not seen the Spanish lad so cant comment but Lund didnt convince me today that he is the awnser.Morais will make a difference for sure but how nice it would be to have a Sheridan or Wellens type in there with Furman.Ah well only one game, lets win on Tuesday!

Good post and I've been thinking this for years, it's especially annoying when these sort of players get slated when the problem clearly lies elsewhere. Reid was one of many players who had a poor game but what dissapointed me was that he doesn't appear to of lost any of the weight he's supposidly lost in pre-season as for his gameplay I get the feeling that Reid wanted the ball to his feet, which wasn't going to happen with our midfield so atm a partnership of Smith and Parker has potential to work with the current system (but note the word potential)
