Stevie_J
I find the suggestion that Kieran Lee is better than Eardley ludicrous.
Buckshawlatic
"Hughes Shefki Kuqi Kuqi would score more than 18 given a full season I feel, which Hughes failed to do" I may be wrong but wasn't Hughes on 18 when we decided not to play him again and send him to Blackpool? palmer1
I find the suggestion that Kieran Lee is better than Eardley ludicrous. christ i didnt see that! Eardley scored more goals and probably had more assists so how does Lee add more?
Wozzer
all about the day though. smalley and kalala were tremendous that day. Is right. I remember reading the everton mb after the game and they thought we'd signed Michael Essien for the day.
Fruitygoo
all about the day though. smalley and kalala were tremendous that day. Smalley showed that day was he was highly rated - He was outstanding in the air, won everything and then ran at them on the deck. If he'd played with that much effort every other time he had the shirt on, he'd have been one hell of a player. I guess if you can't show your best on the big stage, you never will. leighton baines (i think!) was petrified of him that day.....
opinions4u
Well, £1 at 20/1 to win at Anfield. Bet placed!
Ackey
As others have rightly pointed out, Kalala was magnificent that day. Dodgy most of the other times he played, but put in a shift and a half for us on Merseyside.
jsslatic
Everton Liverpool To add, Kalala was bloody brilliant that day.
24hoursfromtulsehill
Plus Davies and Hughes played a blinder - they not only gave us an out ball when we were under the cosh, but they were an actual goal threat on the counter. Be interesting to see whether Kuqi and Simpson and Taylor can provide the same thing tomorrow night when we go 1-0 up, which we will. I guess if you can't show your best on the big stage, you never will. leighton baines (i think!) was petrified of him that day..... There were just so many great individual performances that day, which is exactly what you need when you play one of the big-boys as a minnow. Kalalla, who had been poor let's face it prior; just had "one of those of games" - the Essien reference someone posted above wasn't too wide of the mark; he was superb. Lomax came in & did well, from a standing start really as he hadn't played many games at all prior. He got an assist for 'the' goal too IIRC? Gary Mac, we all know about - what I time to catch one a sweet as that eh? Smalley & Eardley we're absolutely outstanding - and justified the praise they had received up to that point. I was amazed no bids came in for either of them off the back of that game. Reuben & Stammy dealt with everything; even when Everton threw on the cavalry in Yakubu and the other later on. Hughes & Davies we top draw; both in holding the ball, providing a threat & also tracking back to 'defend from the front' Great memories of that day - what a team performance! We're going to need more of the same tomorrow. On games like this one, it's no use just 1 or 2 of our players having blinders. The gulf in quality soon swallows those 1 or 2 up. We need 8/9+ of our guys to have blinders, and when that happens - who knows eh? [Oh - and as for the OP on this thread, no way is Kieran Lee better than Neale Eardley; as good as Lee has been - he's nowhere near Eardley's standard.]
jsslatic
Crossley was also excellent that day, didn't have to do too much but oozed calm and experience, especially in the final throws of the game.
philliggi
Lol Im forever calling him tom clarke. getting him and his brother mixed up. As for the Eardley/Lee debate, Literally everything we do going forward starts through Lee. weather he makes the tackle and plays it out, plays a neat one two or beats a man, everything starts with him. Eardley was never the greatest defender, and for me lumped it forward too much. Im still amazed he played a full season in the premiership. Not Eardley bashing though, Im not comparing them as individuals, im comparing them as to what they added to the team as a whole. I would still choose Lee over Eardley today. On the Hughes/ Kuqi thing, I might have worded it badly. I actually meant Hughes got 18 in a full season, I feel Kuqui would get more given a full season. Remember we only signed him 5 or ten games in. On the face of it, I would much rather take Todays squad to merseyside than that we took in 2008
