Bury: Directions, Beer & Food

Recommended Posts

NOTE: This information may be out-of-date in an ever-changing world.

Bury F.C., Gigg Lane, Bury, BL9 9HR.

Latics supporters will be in the Bridge Group West Stand (Manchester Road End), where the first few rows seem to be lower than the pitch, and are steeped at less of a gradient than the rows further back. The stand does not span the entire length of the goal line, but it is well covered and the low roof generates a decent atmosphere when there is any singing.

Disabled facilities:

For away fans, there is room for 6 wheelchairs and helpers in the Manchester Road Stand. Disabled Toilet: In South Stand and Starkies Restaurant. Parking: Available, please book. For the Blind: 12 seats in the Main Stand family section have headphones for hospital radio commentary.

How to get there:

By road:

M60: Exit M60 at junction 17 (s/p A56 Whitefield, Salford). At roundabout follow signs to `Whitfield A56, Radcliffe (A665), Bury A56' onto the A56. After 0.3 miles go straight over double traffic lights passing McDonalds on LHS (s/p Bury A56, Radcliffe A665). At lights after 0.8 miles (just after the `Bull's Head' pub) bear right (s/p Bury A56). Straight on at lights after 1.0 miles (s/p Town Centre). After 1.0 miles turn right (s/p Football Ground) into Gigg Lane. Ground is on RHS after 0.1 miles.

* Note that Gigg Lane is normally closed on match days.

M66:

Either

leave at Junction 3. Take the left hand exit at the junction and follow this road until you come to the junction with the A56 Manchester Road. At this T-junction which has traffic lights, turn right towards Bury. You will pass the Swan & Cemetery pub on your left and then some playing fields. At the end of the playing fields just before the traffic lights and a couple of pubs, turn right* into Gigg Lane for the ground.

OR

leave at Junction 2, from where the ground is signposted. Take the A58 towards Bury and at the second set of traffic Lights, turn left onto Heywood Street (B6219). Go Straight over a mini-roundabout and at the next roundabout, turn right onto Wellington Road (still the B6219). Follow this road to the end, where you will come to a T-junction. Turn left onto the A56 (signposted Manchester). After passing through a set of traffic lights, turn Left into Gigg Lane for the ground.

Car parking:

There is no parking in Gigg Lane itself (and the road can be closed) but many of the surrounding streets are without parking restrictions. If you are really struggling, there are a couple of roads on the right of Manchester Road, which tend to have spaces, or, if you fancy going into town first, there are several pay and display car parks in the town centre, around 15 minutes away, the closest being at the top of Manchester Road and on Knowsley Street.

By Metrolink:

Bury Metrolink is 0.7 miles from the ground. Trams run from Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly. Please double-check on Metrolink (0161) 205 2000 and Rail Enquiries on (0345) 484 950.

By bus: Nos. 90, 92, 134, 135 and 137 run every ten minutes from the transport interchange down Manchester Road down Manchester Road past the end of Gigg Lane.

By foot:

Turn left out of station along covered passageway and past various bus-stops. At the T-junction with Haymarket Street (by the Chicago Rock Cafe) turn left. Straight over the crossroads, down Knowsley Street. This comes out opposite `Sergios' and a white monument. Here, turn left along the Manchester Road, towards the `Staff of Life'. Turn left after about 0.5 miles into Gigg Lane. Travelling supporters using the Metro Link are advised to check on their website for any engineering works - http://www.metrolink.co.uk/

By taxi:

There is a taxi rank between the Metrolink station and the bus station in Bury Interchange.

Where to eat and drink:

Bury FC Sports Bar welcomes visiting fans both before and after the match as long as it is not too busy, charging £1 for non-members. Food is served and there is a large-screen TV and a separate children's area.

There are plenty of pubs around the ground and along Manchester Road in particular.

The Swan & Cemetery, about a ten minute walk from the ground, is a Thwaites pub, serving good hand-pulled beer and has a separate restaurant area with children welcome. It also has a car park and a beer garden.

The Pack Horse welcomes children and gets busy when showing the early kick-offs on the large screen TV. Food is limited to sandwiches and rolls, but there is a conveniently situated chippy around the corner from it.

The Staff Of Life is the nearest pub to the ground. It is a basic pub for lovers of hand-pulled J.W. Lees ales.

The Rose & Crown is around a 10 minutes walk from the ground just off the A56 by the town centre. It serves food but is limited to sandwiches on a Saturday lunchtime. Children are welcome.

Also recommended on Manchester Road, is the Waterloo, nearer the town centre.

Where to eat:

There is the usual selection of food in the ground.

There is a Chicago Rock Café, Pizza Hut, Burger King and a fish and chip restaurant near the transport interchange, and the usual range of McDonald’s, KFC, Chiquito and Frankie & Benny’s in town or on one of the many retail parks on the outskirts.

Along the A56 there are Italian, kebabs, Chinese and the usual array of pizzas and chippies.

When in Rome…..or rather when in Bury, it is customary to sample the famous black pudding from Stall No 5, Edward Block, Bury Open Market, which has been trading for over 40 years.

If you are coming by metrolink, as opposed to bus. The quicker way to walk (no pubs in the route though). Is when you come out of the metrolink stop go up the stairs and turn right, leave the interchange, cross over the road to the Woodbury centre at Bury College, there used to be an underpass to ease road crossing but I'm unsure if it's still there. Go down the road on the other side of the street to the interchange, called Market Street, keeping the Woodbury centre to your right, and the interchange behind you. Keep going along market street with the athletics track to your left, go straight over the two roundabouts. At the third roundabout, at the entrance to the cemetery turn right. That road is Gigg Lane and the ground is on the left.

There is also some parking on Market street, near the interchange it is meter based but the closer to the ground it is street parking.

Instead of turning right into Wellington road (see Diego's directions above for jct 2 M66) go straight over the roundabout follow the road round to the right, and at the next roundabout Market street intersects the road you are on (Parkhills street). Take the first exit for towards the ground and the third exit to go towards the town centre.

Just a note for anyone thinking of travelling up from town to bury on the tram .... there won't be any! Engineering works all weekend so bury line is shut down. Replacement buses are being used but those looking for maybe a beer in town then trip up to gigg lane may find the bus a little tedious.

Something to look forward to when Oldham gets the Metrolink. BTW in 1900, the first electric trams were introduced on the Manchester to Oldham route, after a delay because the Manchester trams used on the route had to have different brakes fitted to cope with the hills of Oldham.

Now that the metrolink is known to be knackered on Saturday, for those looking to get to Bury on public transport from Oldham. The two main options are go to Rochdale and get the 471 from Rochdale or go to Middleton and get the 163 from Middleton. They will both be quicker than going to Manchester and changing.
