JonesyOAFC
Soccer AM has been a diabolical mess of a show for about 6 or 7 years now. I watched it a couple of weeks ago and it almost gave me a brain hemorrhage.

laticsrblue
The "entertainment" did remind me that Simpson has a Sports Science degree. Wonder what he thought about the team's fitness and Butler? Edited March 21, 2013 by laticsrblue

slystallone
The "entertainment" did remind me that Simpson has a Sports Science degree. Wonder what he thought about the team's fitness and Butler? He's 4 years younger than me is Simpson, so will have studied a similar course content to me. So by that reasoning, he'll most likely think exactly the same as me on Butler and ultimately Dickov's strength, conditioning and fitness regimes. Namely, they were incorrect; not fit for purpose and basically :censored:e. I was very pleased to hear at the meeting that LJ is firm believer on the sciences involved in the game, and was also pleased to hear that he's looking for a Number 2 who also is an advocate. He did say he would have to way up whether to bring in an outright specialist; as it would take away a players wage and so mean 1 less player signing. Oh - and soccer am is truly terrible. philliggi
would people take having a player less if we brought in a fitness conditioner/sports scientist who produced results? personally i think i would. i know lee is capable of doing all the same stuff as a specialist would be but time constraints make it impossible realistically. having a fit team in the last 20 mins of games could be worth 5 or 10 points over the course of the season, and if we had been sharp and 100%fit this year all year, we wouldnt be in the predicament we are now imo. so effectively, would you take this years squad being match fit for 90 mins, without (pure example) weslowski, or Simpson

When my Dad met clipboard man not long after PD came in at some forum at the Italian, he was quite impressed. That will have been before clipboard man started acting like one of the coaches, though. Plus he may be able to talk the talk but not walk the walk. The weight issues Feeney and Crofty have had when they were here is a definite indication that he wasn't fit for purpose. I'm not sure about the benefit of a sports scientist at our level, especially as IMHO some of the aspects could be done by the physios. £20k a year is easily an extra player or a bit more on the contract for a few players. At the Premiership level the players will be making in a week what the sports scientist makes in a year. Here it's not far off even for some of the players. slystallone
I think it's a key area.....but, if you've got a Manager, a Number 2 and the other support coaches all on the same page - tapped into the same sports science prinicpals + plus supported by the physio....i have to say; at our level, i'd take the extra player over a fitness coach. You do need one or all of the management team to cover off the fitness and conditioning though - and it seems LJ is keen in this area so we may not need to make an extra appointment?
