Di Canio gone from Swindon

It depends on your views of political theory. If you subscribe to the idea of it being a circle where left and right ultimately meet, rather than a straight line with left and right at the extremes, then yes ultimately you can.

I do think Miliband is relevant in so much as it was his resignation that threw this whole story into the limelight. The media are so two dimensional these days, I'm not sure they'd have picked up on it otherwise.

Trying to look at this logically. I agree with the premise that to be a real fascist you probably also need to be racist, or at the very least a xenophobic nationalist. However I don't honestly think Di Canio is a racist. He's intelligent enough, but he's a footballer, not a politician. I think if his genuinely held views were analysed fully the conclusion would be that although he might have a few right wing ideas he isn't actually a fascist after all.

This is the realistic way to look at it. Politics plays probably only a small part in DiCanio's life, which is okay, and he's much more of a fan than a player, fascist-wise. But he is racist, as evidenced by his comments on Jews in the wake of his Nazi-salute. A few black friends does not cleanse him of this stain, and more fool them for their association with him. Plus, like I said: if you can have a little pop at even a fan of fascism, you should.

In fact you could probably suggest he's actually just as much a fascist as Blair is a socialist...

Blair's a Christian Democrat.

Ran out of bio-degradable fuel ages ago. :titanic:

As to the prospect of BME (is that the latest politically correct acronym for 'ethnic'?) Lib Dem MPs in 2015, you're probably correct, but I would argue it'll be such a small sample that it couldn't possibly be considered representative. :coffee1:

BME - black and/or minority ethnic.

He can't decide himself now... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22017645

Which to me puts him on the same danger list as US neo-cons. As if we didn't know that already...

Still white, I presume?

I predict no BME Lib Dem MPs in 2015. I'd go down the bookies, but that would be to waste valuable time.

Presumably, I wasn't being serious, though. Some bookie might give you odds on that, but then again they might parachute a BME candidate into a relatively safe seat. They aren't winning a seat of another party at the next election, but they will retain a few.

You can't be a fascist without being a racist. It's one of the central defining characteristics.

Either Di Canio is thick and was just getting carried away with the banter of his beloved Lazio and their fascist fans or he is now a liar, because he has finally stated he does not believe in fascist ideology. It took him long enough to make the simple unequivocal statement!

I thought Swindon's ex chairman was a dick. Miliband resigned because of his political beliefs? I think it might also be due to the fact that his dad was jewish and legged it from the holocaust. Miliband's reaction was kind of understandable.

I thought Milliband was :censored:ing off to NY to head some sort of charity, sounds about right he would be resigning then?

He only worked a few days a year for considerable recompense. I wonder if it is possible to have dealings with an English football club whilst having business interests in New York. Can't think of any examples off the top of my head.

Wasn't intended to be. Just pointing out it was a part time job that he could easily have maintained. Resigning because of Di Canio cost him a significant amount of money.

I'm well aware that someone can do a job, especially a part time job from the US and have business interets in another country, It was Millibands decision to step back from politics and his decision to step down from Sunderland and the timing that made me think it may have been more than a coincidence.

But thanks anyway. :OASISscarf:

All ok then. I had no intention of being patronising (that means talking down to someone) :OASISscarf:

He is, but i think that's connected with him leaving Parliament. He's well connected with the Clintons and his wife is American. Also, he can wipe his hands/put some distance from the debacle that is his brother.

His Sunderland resignation is connected to the Di Canio appointment.

He was only part-time at Sunderland, and it may be 'good' timing in a perverse way. Though, as said, you can still work in New York and have interests over here.

His dad was Belgian. He came over with his grandfather when the Nazis started kicking off. I think he joined the navy. I remember his work as an academic. Part of the 1960s new wave left. I don't think he'd be happy with his boys!
