Northampton (Coventry): Directions, Beer & Food

Recommended Posts

NOTE: This information may be out of date in an ever-changing world.

Coventry City c/o Sixfields Stadium, Northampton, NN5 5QA

Away fans are located in the South Stand behind the goal, where 800 supporters can be accommodated, with space for an additional 423 available in the East Stand, if necessary.

NOTE: Tickets have to be bought from a portakabin before queuing at the turnstiles.

Disabled supporters’ facilities:

5 accessible parking spaces are available to away supporters, located 100 yards away. Drop-off facilities are available.

How to get there:

By Car:

From The South:
Leave the M1 at Junction 15A and take the A5123 towards Northampton and you will come to the stadium on your right.

From The North:
Leave the M1 at Junction 16 and take the A4500 towards Northampton and you will come to the stadium on your right.

Car parking:
There is a fair-sized car park located at the stadium, which costs £4. Make sure though that you arrive early as it has been known for it to get full for the more popular games. If Northampton Saints Rugby Club are also at home, then the parking can get critical as the Saints play just down the road, so allow extra time on those occasions.

NOTE: Parking in the nearby cinema and restaurant car parks is not allowed, and parking there will probably result in your car being given a £60 ticket, or worse still clamped

By Train:

Northampton train station is over two miles from the stadium, so it’s probably best to hire a taxi. However if you feel like braving the 25-30 minute walk, then come out of the main station entrance, go across the car park, up the steps and then turn right onto Black Lion Hill. Go over the railway bridge and straight on along St James' Road. At the HSS Hire outlet (and the handily-placed Thomas A. Beckett pub on the opposite corner) turn left onto St James' Mill Road. After about 400 yards turn right at the Fabric Warehouse (opposite Jewson) onto Harvey Reeves Road, which further on becomes Edgar Mobbs Way. After about a mile this road brings you out at the stadium, with the South (away) Stand over on your right.

By Bus:

Stagecoach run buses from Greyfriars bus station. You can get the D1/D2/D3 (15 and 45 mins past each hour) from bay 12 to the bus stop by the Sixfields roundabout. The 22/22A (10 and 40 mins past the hour) run from bay 14 to the bus stop by the Study Centre on Edgar Mobbs Way. The number 5 from bay 14 (56 and 26 mins past the hour) runs to the bus stop by Sainsburys. You can also get the 9/9A from bay 13 (every 10 minutes) but you have to walk from the Weedon Road. Ask for a day rider (£3.40 which is cheaper than official car parks) and you get unlimited travel on all Stagecoach buses for the whole day.

From the railway station you can take the D2 bus towards Daventry, which also goes by the Sixfields retail park and stops about 200 yards from the stadium. The buses go from the bridge over the railway at the south end of the station. The trip takes 10-20 mins depending on traffic (which can be heavy if there is a Saints’ rugby match on the same day).

To return, get on at the same stop, but make sure to check which direction the bus is heading as the same stop serves both directions.

Where to eat & drink:

On the A4500 heading from the M1 towards Northampton, you will pass on your left the refurbished Turnpike pub, part of the Beefeater chain, which is thought to welcome away supporters.

In Northampton town centre, there are several notable real ale pubs in addition to the usual Wetherspoon’s. The Malt Shovel Tavern is possibly the best real ale pub in town, having 14 hand pumps and is also listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. To find this pub from the railway station, cross the road in front of the station and head towards the Carlsberg brewery (easily visible). The pub is opposite the brewery, about a ten minute walk. It will probably take you a further 30 minutes to walk to the stadium from here, heading back past the station.

The stadium is built on a leisure complex on the outskirts of Northampton. This consists fast food and eating establishments (including a KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, TGI Friday’s, Old Orleans and a Frankie & Benny’s), a cinema and a bowling alley. There is just one pub on this site called the Sixfields Tavern, which is part of the 'Hungry Horse' chain so offers meals and is family friendly. It also contains a Sports Bar, which shows Sky Sports, but it is primarily for home fans and bouncers man the entrance on match-days. A better bet may be the Tenpin Bowling Alley which contains a bar, admits away fans and shows Sky Sports too.

Real ale is not likely to be on the agenda in the leisure complex. On previous visits, it’s been known for Latics supporters to partake of jugs of cocktails.

Are the Coventry fans boycotting this game, if so it will feel strange stood at an away match with more away fans there.
