I do feel the fragmented reserves league set up hasn't helped with the progression of youths to the first team, a few years ago there were matches played every week throughout the season giving the kids a chance to catch the managers eye on a regular basis.

Entry to a league with a least 16 reserve clubs is something the management needs to look at for next season.

The Manchester and Lancashire Senior Cups are also a shambles and should be reorganised to bring in local non league clubs (who knows we might spot a gem among them).

I agree with you on this not playing enough reserve games means fringe players or those coming back from injury will be a yard or to short of pace at times and when we where not scoring does not give players a chance to stake a claim.

Although the standard ain't the best in the reserves now days still

Gives players a good run out and beats the behind closed doors friendly.

Suppose its a friendly with a slightly more competitive edge.

I rather see us put the reserves in the Manchester premier cup and even agree to playing all ties away if need be.

Very good point, think there may have been an issue at the time about depth of squad and injury crises meant that we had to resort to playing schoolboys occasionally, which is counter-productive, especially if there are weather issues in winter too. The addition of local non-league sides could be useful too as it will give both us and them an idea of where players' respective levels are at, however, think local non-league sides might have issues with fixture congestion and/or pitch use. Eg can't expect City Ressies and Hyde to both play on the same or connected days on Hyde's ground, unless it was against each other.

There is probably a better solution than the current status quo of ad hoc friendlies and cups which themselves sound a bit disorganised anyway. One suggestion could be something akin to the Rugby 7s style of having different trophies to play for within the same competition. You could even do some double headers to bring the crowds in now and then.

Thing is these cups are proberly there biggest earners and the county FA will do all they can to keep the big boys happy to help maintain interest or attract publicity
