RoytonLatics
Given it's the centenary year for the end of WW1, I was wondering if anyone had information on our players who came so close to winning the old first division. Did any of them go on to fight in the war, did any not return home?
rudemedic
Just now, RoytonLatics said: Given it's the centenary year for the end of WW1, I was wondering if anyone had information on our players who came so close to winning the old first division. Did any of them go on to fight in the war, did any not return home? I'm fairly certain, off the top of my head, that at least one didn't return home. But to be more detailed I'd have to find my team from the town of chimneys book.
LaticsPete
Arthur Cashmore, who played 16 times that season, received facial shrapnel injuries but after the war came back and played for the club until the end of 1919. None of the published record books give any mention of fatalities amongst the staff.
Wardie
Football league runners-up in 1914/15 as well. My grandfather, who was 17 when he enlisted at the outbreak of the war, was a Latics follower.

kowenicki
This really good video mentions that team... sort of. Soldiers letter to home is shown asking if “Latics are still second?” https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11549383/manchester-remembers-city-united-and-the-first-world-war

LaticsPete
Have now found mention of Galvin. Played 13 times and scored 3 goals in 1905/6, when we were still in Lancs Combination.
