It’s a complicated process, but it’s a mixture of laziness, what sounds best and special mentions. If none of those work I’ll revert to the standard surname. For example - Rags is easier to type than Raglan. Conlon works better than Con. Harry is easier to type than Charsley and Charl doesn’t work.
